Prepare for the #LodanRespawn2024 Existing characters may choose to be displace from/have memories of different timelines, thereby allowing returning members the option to retcon their whole character. These changes are the result of the "Unnatural Fog" plot device that is running between now and the Respawn. The plot is simple: no matter where your character is, that place is shrouded in a thick fog that suspends time, but not thoughts or memories, so even if they're repeating the same day over and over again, they continue to remember, so each time feels like a new day. For those retconning OCs; this is where new versions of themselves have the opportunity to replace the old versions. Official lore and tree updates will be announced asap

He nodded to her. “Let’s start with health and toxin then. I’ll do toxins; it comes rather naturally to me. And I’ll be sure to give it a bright color as I do so.” In the case of toxins, his was a light purple with faded green undertones. Two-tone magic wasn’t unheard of in his research, but it wasn’t an overly common trait. Given how much of her own research Edel had done, she had probably already seen two-toned aura before. Plus this way there’d be an extra color to see mixing with her magic.

Since he chose to start with Toxins, Edelweiss decided trying Health first. The differently applied magic seemed to be conflicting with each other, and the former gradient retreated in irregular fashion to the very edge of their respective laced fingers, in very clear limit lines... then they slowly blurred again as if forming strange luminous afterimages of their hands. "...Well, this certainly answers one of the questions... Toxins and Health only mix if we're actively trying to mix them. But they can." But that in itself raised other questions; was that reaction only apparent to those 2 spells, or would the same happen for others? If so, was it possible to achieve with magic from different branches, or only within the same? "This should be handy for medical treatments... Ah, hold onto the Toxins for a bit longer, I'll switch to it too."
Then, it was time to test casting the same spell and allow the energy to be as visible as humanly (or well Anderly) affordable. It looked like the same effect as an one-sided cast at first, with the suave smooth gradient going up and making a slow transition between their respective colors - albeit Lasair's aura having a color now was a considerable differential from the last demonstration. So he had duo tones for this... interesting. But then right on the next second she found herself unable to dwell on that thought longer, because the soft gradient wasn't as soft to the eye anymore, nor stopping midway through their lower arms. It had quickly slithered up to elbow-lenght and was glowing bright like a large multi-colored eletrical lamp. It kind of hurt to look at it directly for too long. Like looking at something too beautiful would be painful (and in some ways, it is). "...Alright. I have to admit. This is impressive." Then she added as barely a whisper: "And looks like we just found a way to bypass Tier V..."

Lasair couldn’t resist grinning when he saw the glowing magical thing they had created. It was exciting, like discovering a new branch of magic all over again. Only this wasn’t a new branch, it was an old and well established one that was just being applied in a new way now.
“I do hope you’ll write this all down and share a copy with me. I’ll even help you write it. This kind of thing needs to be documented and looked into further. I you don’t mind me asking, what other spells do you know? I want to be so bold as to actually attempt a simultaneous cast with you, however I don’t think Toxin is the best choice for this.” And then after a moment of thought, he pulled his magic back, causing their shared glow to dim. Best not to leave that sitting for too long, else it becomes volatile. “I can only imagine what would happen if we each concentrated on a tier V skill, but I think that test would be better placed outside, in our training field. Without the children present. But I won’t deny that I’m itching to test this further, see where we can go with it.” Suddenly it became very hard for Lasair to feel like his depressed self. He was too busy being excited over a new magic now.

"It makes me think of the old mages of the Lost World. So much of their knowledge faded from the common people and we've always accepted that the skills we had degenerated through the generations, but... Maybe it wasn't that they had more magic than us. Maybe instead they just had more people who could use it, and who knew to use it together." Since most Anders passed their lives pretending to be human and hiding their inheritage, magic knowledge was so limited nowadays it was aggravating. And the knowledge that it could be mixed and increased? Not even need to mention...
"Of course, though we'll have to take a little break from the energy gathering for me to take notes." The amusement in her eyes was starting to be noticeable as well as she momentarily let go of Lasair's hand to fetch a pen and start taking notes on the book that remained on her lap. This was being both incredibly productive and - although a guilty pleasure to admit - fun to be able to openly test and discuss magic with someone who could actually give imput and knowledge instead of just being a child learning. At Lasair's mention of what would happen if they both concentrated on a Tier V spell, the corners of her lips twitched up for a second. "In the least of results, we'd probably make it bright enough to illuminate a couple squares of the city at night."
"I can bond the book to you, then you'll see the new notes as I write them even on other days and can add your own too." That was one of the very few spells not from the standard Magic Tree that she knew how to use, but it was handy for mass production. Just a few drops of blood and then chanting the spell. Only going to work if he accepts getting his finger pricked though. "That's how I made two copies of that first book (no amount of patience upon the earth would make me write and draw all that exactly the same 3 times over). About my spells, well... there's Aeromancy, Kinetics, Deceit, Health, Toxins, Telekinesis, Gating and the first magic Augment. Now I must ask yours too though; you made me curious."

Her first statement was a wonder indeed. He had been discovering more and more about the old world every day in MI’s library. So much information was there, waiting to be discovered. His smile faded as she retracted her hand and got up to begin her note taking. Yes, even though he didn’t want to take a break, it would be better if he did. It would allow his magic to recover somewhat from all the manipulation he was putting it under. Her invitation to bond him to the book was an interesting one; that wasn’t one of the spells he had noticed in the last book of non-stand spells he read. “I wouldn’t mind being bonded, on the condition that you teach me how to cast it for future reference. And as for spells? I know all of them. At least the first tier of them all, that is. Toxins is the only one I’ve mastered; it just came so easily to me that I was moving up through the tiers and before long I was out of material to learn from.” It shouldn’t come as a surprise; he was leader of the magic-centered guild, after all. “I think telekinesis would be a safe one to test for duel-casting the first rank. If not that, then perhaps Aeromancy.”
Now he just wished she would write faster so they could go back to testing this.

"Hm, sure, I don't mind." She replied simply when Lasair requested to be taught how to bond the books. It was just minor spell she learned from her mother, short and simple, so shouldn't take long for the redhead man to get the knack of it as well. Meanwhile that though she still has things to write and, despite doing that as fast as she could manage to so that their could return to those little-not-so-little magic experiments, there was no magic she could really use to make the letters appear instantly on the paper other than manually producing them.
That didn't mean they couldn't keep talking while she writes though. "Wow, you're a full jack-of-all-trades then... I guess it's plausible when considering your guild." Though it did come as a bit of a surprise. Herself on the other side didn't know as many different branches, but she did master higher tiers of quite a few skills instead. She felt some amusement in mentally pondering they might be called even then. "WHat spell do you rather try next between those two? Obviously Aeromancy is the only elemental kind I know, but either of them work."

“Hmm…” he thought to himself, allowing her to write while he thought over the question to himself. “Perhaps Gating. I wonder if we would open both of our portals at once, or an entirely new one from casting together. I’m thinking we should start with ones that probably have obvious synergistic reactions though. In the case of tele, I can guess that it will be easier to lift a mass and perhaps we could lift a bit more than the normal limits of a tier one cast. And for aero, a stronger gust of wind is to be expected. But for something like deceit or kinetics, I’m not sure what would happen. And for your other skills, health and toxins, we would need to focus the energy into an actual person. I don’t fancy getting wounded or poisoned to test the effectiveness, however.”

Considering how there was a literal (not very ordely) pile of papers, blotters and books spreaded over her coffee table still, Aeromancy might not be the best of choices. It'd likely cause a mess of papers lifting up and being scattered across the room, unless she and Lasair moved to somewhere else in the house to test it. Then, there were the reasons Lasair mentioned when dealing with the other spells. For an initial test either Telekinesis or Gating seemed to be the best choices, so she figured they could just go ahead with his first suggestion.
"Telekinesis first and then Gating it is, then." She said as she finished taking notes and set the pen aside, reaching out her hand to him again. "Ready to start whenever you are."

While Lasair did look forward to testing these new hybrid magical spells outside, he didn’t quite have the patience to request it right now. And Edel seemed more than willing to test a few indoors. Well, best to get on with it then. He reached his hand out to her and began concentrating on a telekinesis spell. “Just tell me what you want to move,” he said, ready to execute the spell as soon as she specified.

"Hmm..." She pondered for a second as Lasair mentioned telling him what they should move. "Anything on the coffee table. Just start lifting what we can and then settle it all back down when the cast is close to ending. They're most papers and books, and other light things anyway, might be handy to see how much we can move together with a rank I spell."

He nodded and began slowly releasing the spell as she did the same. His aura took on a sparkly yellow color for this spell before blending in with her own aura. Looking at the table, he picked out a few pieces of paper to start with, slowly adding in some books and other materials he saw there. From his guessing, one person alone should be able to lift most things on the table, but not all of them. Hopefully him and Edel working together would mean they could lift all the materials. Getting everything in the air would be wonderful.

Edelweiss felt Lasair seemed to be underestimating the mess on her coffee table. While the loose papers and blotters might be said practically weightless (and therefore a bad choice to cast Aeromancy on), just a couple of those accountancy books would already take someone's full effort to lift if they're only using the first rank of Telekinesis. Well, they had two people doing it in the end, so results might not be too far from what he was hoping.
She watched their auras as they concentrated on their own spells and the joined results. Her own glow took an appearence of ripples on the top of water, and the rose-gold and sparkly yellow tones seemed to stain each other with a peculiar (but pretty subtle with how close the colors were) mix of their respective properties. Slowly, sheet after sheet of paper and books rose up in the air, floating calmly with nothing sustaining them. It did seem more than each of them could lift on their own... though to know exactly how much more, they'd have to measure it on a proper weighted scale.

When he began to feel strain from the magical effort being exerted, he released the spell as slowly as he could, letting everything fall back down onto the table. Once it all rested back down, he exhaled slowly. “That was interesting. I think it was more than a normal cast would allow for. Can you estimate just how much was lifted?” His own mind was already beginning to work some estimates in his head, but he wanted to compare them to hers just to be safe.

"Roughly twice more, I think. Around 4 kilograms, give or take a few grams." She replied, taking a short moment while they were replacing the floating objects back on the table for doing some math in her mind.
"From this I can initially assume that merging spells can either make it into a cast of the next rank, or at least increase the potency considerably... Do you want to test uneven tiers of Telekinesis (like one of us casting a Tier I and the other a Tier II) first to check if it adds up evenly, or move unto Gating and leave further experimeting with Telekinesis for another day?" Both options had their pros and cons. It'd be good to check more on the same spell and get more variety of tests, to get more exact conclusions about it in specific. But still they were only two people working on it, so their daily casts were limited and if they were to test varied branches of magic that same day then using their casts sparingly for the same branch would be the best choice.

“Hmm,” he pondered her proposal for a few moments before answering, the inter-workings of his mind trying to decide on the most scientific approach for this. “Let’s start with testing various rank one spells together; then we can move on to comparing different ranks. One and two, one and three, etcetera with the different combinations. So, gating next. But I must admit I am worried about what could happen during this. What if we accidentaly open both of our portals on top of each other? What would happen to the contents?”
