Prepare for the #LodanRespawn2024 Existing characters may choose to be displace from/have memories of different timelines, thereby allowing returning members the option to retcon their whole character. These changes are the result of the "Unnatural Fog" plot device that is running between now and the Respawn. The plot is simple: no matter where your character is, that place is shrouded in a thick fog that suspends time, but not thoughts or memories, so even if they're repeating the same day over and over again, they continue to remember, so each time feels like a new day. For those retconning OCs; this is where new versions of themselves have the opportunity to replace the old versions. Official lore and tree updates will be announced asap

"......" She almost chuckled at that. Had it been said anytime till a little under a month ago she would have laughed for sure. But at least she did, indeed, feel a little better than before the hug. "...I guess I did. And you as well." She commented simply, noting how he was hugging her about as tight as she had him and giving him a few pats on the back before letting go - they couldn't stay glued the whole day, right? At least, it was better to pull away while the comforting feeling is still there than after it starts becoming awkward. It'd linger longer that way.
"Thanks." She'd wait a moment to see if he has anything to say, and if not, just time to think of a following chatter topic. Maybe they could talk about magic. There were some things on that that she'd like to acertain too.

When the hug ended, he stepped back and sat down across from her again, feeling somewhat calmer. “It’s no problem.” The back of his mind echoed ‘for a pretty lady like you,’ but the words didn’t reach his throat. No, he didn’t feel like flirting anymore. The habit would die down, surely. The thoughts would stop repeating in his head. “It’s the least I could do after taking a month to show up here. Which reminds me, if you ever need anything, do not hesitate to ask. I may not have said it since our first meeting, but Lasair Landevier Lupen is ever at your service.” He smiled ever so slightly as he said the words, but it was a faint smile, lasting only a moment. Hs smile came rarely these days and as it left his lips, he wondered faintly if it would return again, and if so, when?
But the thoughts left as he looked up, looking at Edelweiss now, waiting to see how she would steer the conversation.

That did sound somewhat familiar. The smile too, though it was faint and fleeting like a memory that whisked itself back and away once again. It made her own lips arch up slightly as well for a couple seconds before her gaze lowered to the papers on the table and this time she moved the empty water cup away to pull out the book underneath it.
"well then, any services I might require contain as strange of questions as my prior ones... I was in the middle of a minor research on magic before you arrived though. Maybe we can discuss it?" She could make quite an improvement if got some some fresher input where her mind is getting stuck - and if he wants maybe, just maybe, he might end gaining some quieter nights even if he still rejects those Tier III sugar pills too. Just having something lighter to think and pass the hours with instead of constantly drowning in their personal grief. Or that old trick she learned from Clue back when first started her job... that might be too dark for Lasair though, so maybe not a good idea to offer it now. Only if there's a later chance.

He nodded. “Sure, what area have you been looking into? I know a bit of everything.” The topic of magic was always one Lasair enjoyed, even in his current state of mind. It was something he could focus on, at the very least. He enjoyed the endless research he could do, the translations he found, all of that. It had been filling up more and more time of his life lately, but that wasn’t a problem. It was more a solution, an escape from the demons in his mind.
So having Edel bring the topic up was more than welcome from his point of view. Perhaps it would help him stay in this well of calmness.

"I have multiple little things about magic that I'm looking on, but this one in specific is about Auras. What they can tell about the state of health and of mind of an individual, to be more specific." She turned the book to the him see the open pages, a half-drawn anatomical chart and graphic about colors, lenghts and levels of opacity and intensity. "For starters, even though they all seem really unique (like fingerprints) there seem to be some details in common between them... and between each 'type' of Ander too."
Post by Lasair Landevier Lupen on Mar 23, 2016 6:26:40 GMT
He blinked a few times, the topic being one he hadn’t looked much into. At least not yet. He usually focused his time on the spell casting part of magic. Furrowing his eyebrows, he studied the page a minute or so before looking back up at her. “I’ve never seen my own aura. When I cast magic, there’s the occasional chance that the magic could emit a color while the spell jumps from the internal to the external, but in that case the color depends on the spell. I usually make sure none of the energy is wasted in producing a glow or color, however, so it only happens if I’m rushed or distracted in some way. More magical energy goes towards creating the desired effect that way.” He paused, looking down at his hand and contemplating whether he should deliberately try to focus the energy into being lost as a glow rather than into the actual cast.
“Even in others, both people and books, aura is usually reported as only being visual when casting a spell and the color will change with the spell. Although sometimes the color can change from person to person, even if they cast the same spell.”
Post by Edelweiss Fjäril on Mar 23, 2016 7:19:25 GMT
"From experience, that's not entirely accurate. It's easier to turn an aura visible while casting something, mainly something that require a large amount of focus, but it can be done without actually casting a spell, with either just the preparation or just the flow of energy. Danny in particular was prone to do that too and she can do it freely - hers is this wispy, otherworldly-looking purple. We both saw it back while rescuing Skye, remember? She was the only light source in the tunnel besides Ikuze's torch." Edelweiss pointed out simply. She didn't feel like she's revealing any secrets, because those were all things both her and Lasair could and had already witnessed together and in first-hand; at most, that was just a detail she might have paid more mind to than he did in the past. "Our little indebted Queen of Rogues also used it too back then in a lesser degree. Warm apple red tones."
Maybe he could do better with another demonstration in the present time, though. And the windows and door were all closed, so it should be fine. The redhead just stretched out an arm and focused casting energy there until a soft rose-gold glow wavered around her hand for a few seconds - and then she relaxed and let it fade again. "Color stability is pretty individual; mine is always like this, and I've seen kids who can vary from blue to greenish tones depending on the spell (the core color is usually similar to the secondaries in the ones I took as examples though)."
"As far as I've seen, coloration per se doesn't affect the rate we spend energy for casting, but the absence of color or glow require more concentration to maintain than otherwise for most users. So as a result, keeping spells unseen and fully undetected take more stamina, but it's due to draining mental energy instead of physical... Well, of course, that's a generic statement. There's always someone who might be an exception to the rule and have a harder time keeping magic visible instead." And she's rambling again. She needed to stop. No one deserved being forced to listen to her being a nerd about magic to this extent. At least should take a break and let Lasair breathe... that if he doesn't think she's too crazy to keep the chat going.

He nodded along with her, thinking back to that night when Danny threatened necro on the guard. Danny had glowed purple, but wasn’t that because of the type of magic being cast? Lasair remembered his kinetic platforms being more of a white color. His eyes were instantly drawn to her hand and the warm color rising from it. That was occurring without a specific spell in mind? Huh. But her last few statements matched up to his, at least they mostly did.
“Danny’s aura isn’t always purple though; as I said it depends on the spell. The deep purple was for necro, and it changed shades when casting other spells. But for kinetic platforms, it was a very bright white. And when I spoke of energy, I meant energy transfer and not energy expended. I’ve found that when I focus my spells into having no color, the desired effect is a little bit stronger. It’s hard to notice, but for example, my candle flame will last a few seconds longer if there’s no color when it’s lit. However I don’t find that it takes an excessive amount of extra stamina, just a little bit more focus when manipulating the channels of energy. And speaking of,” He peered down at his hand a moment and then held it out towards it, holding it over the table.
His hand looked perfectly normal there. “I’m a bit confused about what you mean with default aura color though, because I have a large bit of magical energy concentrated in my hand right now, but,” he turned his hand over, wiggling his fingers. “There’s no color. But if I focus on casting, say, Telekinesis, and I don’t do the thing that keeps the glow internal, well.” A faint yellow glow rose up from his hand, and after a moment of concentration, the glow intensified. The yellow sparkled as if there were little crystals in it. “Hm, looks like I can get the glow to intensify a little. Here, I’ll switch to Geomancy now.” The yellow glow receded and faded much quicker than it formed, and after a few moments, an earthy brown color was faintly visible. And again, after concentrating the color grew and again held the little sparkles in it.
But then he drew the glow back, flexing his hand a moment as he did so. “But if I don’t pick a spell,” he held up his hand as if to wave. “No color.”

Danny wasn't the only one - Kinetics seemed to cause oddball colorations for quite a few people indeed. It was the exception in Edelweiss' own case as well, with no color whatsoever. But it was worth taking a further look--
Lasair then preceeded to try and exemplify his doubts by changing cast preparations. Faint yellow, and then brown, and then nothing.
She held her own hand up, palm hovering against his without touching. There was this subtle sense of pressure around, like a magnetic field - one that was faint and almost unnoticeable, and she could bypass with her fingers with ease, but would just as easily disturb a machine. An aura, yes. It was still there nonetheless, just... "It's here, but... it's completely clear." She settled her hands atop the coffee table and leaned herself forward to look closer. "This is amazing. It's the first naturally transparent aura I've ever saw."

“And this is the first I’ve heard of everyone having their own unique color for aura. I’ll have to find some books that cover the topic to research it further. But tell me, does it change how a handshake feels?” He offered his hand to her, still balling up a large amount of magical energy there, pushing against his fingertips. And depending on how she answered his inquiry, he might have more questions. Like if having a casual (but invisible) aura would affect other interactions. Maybe he could get another hug out of it if she were equally curious.
After the verdict of the handshake, whatever it may be, a different question came to his mind. “I wonder what would happen if two magical auras intermixed. Would the colors simply blend? Would one over shadow the other? Would there be any affect on the owners of said aura? Would there be no reaction at all?”

"Maybe if you were a machine." The redhead woman responded simply and reached one of her hands to shake Lasair's, though there was the barest hint of surprise in her expression as she realised he had pretty much started rambling too, but with questions. "You know, all Anders have an aura and it's always there, just, usually it's retracted to skin-level. So it's not like shaking our hands would feel any different just because the range of said auras is expanded, our hands didn't change. Though.... there's this little sense of pressure around though if you pay enough attention - if you were a bot or clockwork doll, your arm would have got damage from this." That was something that had been tested plenty in her guild already, those sparring bots she had bought from Mingos months ago were really useful to experiment on why tech breaks with Ander touch.
"Hmm some of those questions are hard to answer, I didn't test it with a variety of magic large enough to be sure of everything still. But I think it'd only affect either of us if we were actually casting something, and then how we'd be affected depends on what is being casted-- Maybe trying it firsthand would be easier to see." She focused energy in her own hand again, till the rosy golden glow was visible. It spreaded evenly through her lower arm and wrist, but once it reached the palm and where their fingers held each other's hand there were ripples and 'bubbles' of light that seemed to lazyly hover at random. "Like a 'water and oil' effect, right? They don't mix while there isn't an actual spell going on, guess we'd be getting brindled colors here if yours was visible." She could show what some of the reactions to preparing casts she already knew look like later, depending on his reaction to this and if he's alright with it - Health casts had quite an interesting look in her opinion. But better wait for his initial response first.

He could feel the slight pressure that she mentioned when she concentrated her own aura towards his. Odd, he usually didn’t have a good sense for noticing magic, but he could notice this encounter rather easily. But the way her aura changed and rippled was interesting indeed.
“May I try focusing on a spell or two to see what happens? Or do you already know that they’d simply blend? Want to see it first hand anyway? What would happen if we both tried concentrating on spells? If it were the same one, would the effect be magnified? If it were different spells, would they react to each other?” More and more questions.

"I know some types blend even when it's one-sided, like Health." Little demonstration, and the 'ripples' and 'bubbles' evened out, with her own energy softly climbing up Lasair's arm and fading slowly amid his own aura like a smooth gradient. "Toxins does the same. Then there are others, like Aeromancy, that don't blend at all (at least not one-sided). I didn't test spells when going both ways though. It's worthy a try."

It was pretty the way her aura blended into his, some would even call it art. But then she mentioned not having tried other spells. Well, what better time to experiment than the present? “What shall we mix first? Perhaps Health and Toxins since we already know that they blend with aura? Or would you rather jump into the elemental range and see what happens when they’re paired?”
Post by Edelweiss Fjäril on Mar 24, 2016 4:34:57 GMT
"Whichever you prefer." She shrugged slightly. It actually felt a little strange to shrug while keeping hold of someone else's palm, but so be it. "Though testing absolutely everything won't be possible, since I don't know how to cast all elemental types."
