Prepare for the #LodanRespawn2024 Existing characters may choose to be displace from/have memories of different timelines, thereby allowing returning members the option to retcon their whole character. These changes are the result of the "Unnatural Fog" plot device that is running between now and the Respawn. The plot is simple: no matter where your character is, that place is shrouded in a thick fog that suspends time, but not thoughts or memories, so even if they're repeating the same day over and over again, they continue to remember, so each time feels like a new day. For those retconning OCs; this is where new versions of themselves have the opportunity to replace the old versions. Official lore and tree updates will be announced asap

Being on the receiving end of non-elemental spells sucks. Nuff said. Those were branches of magic she had a foot in as well, so she was used to recognizing the effects. This was Kinetics, right - third tier. Her body felt heavy like lead, and a bitter smile spread on her lips as the mind controlled Lasair grabbed her. Should have seen that coming, that's why having climbed up there without a plan was a bad idea. But... just because her body was hindered, it didn't mean her magic would be.
[Kinetics I + Telekinesis I] She locked in that floating mask as the target and grabbed it with Telekinesis again, dragging it downwards along her. Following, the surge of energy ran down her legs to brake her fall once midway before gravity finished its job and she fell on her feet, legs flexing to soften the impact a bit more. Her joints basically screamed. This wasn't comfortable, at all, but at least she didn't break any bones.
Considering that shadow beast needs a host to attack and it can't fight with a broken puppet (and it's been proved it can make the 'puppet' float with the strings), Lasair should be fine; it would either let go of him or he'd be alright even if gets down after the mask. It was also likely it couldn't use anything the host didn't know how to use. But... Inwards, the redhead's mind tried to review whatever spells she had seen Lasair could cast as a precaution: Projection, Pyromancy, Deceit, Kinetics. There might be more. She was running low on spells of first rank now, and Lasair had used more magic than her even but still kept casting more. This wasn't normal, nor healthy. They had to tear that thing away from him before it drained him dry.

Amon only had time to turn around and blink when Edel landed right in front of him. "That was quick..." he said, control of his arm returning. "What about Lasair and the-"
At that point, a mental scream ripped through the air.
nO! nO! nOoOoO!!!
While Lasair's body would continue to fly up, the puppet meister itself found itself being pulled once again. Making a split-second decision, it released its hold on Lasair; no matter what happened, it would end up on the ground, so it was best to fall alone than to bring with it dead weight. Besides, with the momentum, Lasair would most likely be out of commission for a small amount of time.
A second after releasing its hold, it fell down to the ground, slamming into the floor in a cloud of dust, denting the candle holder and cracking the mask.
There it lay, seemingly defeated, the light slowly dimming on the candle, its strings lay splayed out on the floor.

As the strings left Lasair’s body, the first thing he did was land with a thud on the floor above Edel and Amon. The second thing he did was groan in pain as he realized his magical energy was drained. It made him sore all over and it hurt to move. He struggled to sit up and crawl towards the edge, looking down to see Amon, Edel, the dying fire, and the mask. He wanted to call out, to say something to them, but he couldn’t find his voice. So instead he stayed there, watching them from the edge as he tried very very hard not to fall asleep.

Well, Amon got the answer to his half-asked question rather quickly as the shadow beast hit the ground. As for Lasair... "Lasair, are you alright up there?" Edelweiss called, looking up at the hole in the ceiling. "Las?"
There was no response, maybe he passed out. That smaller thud after she and the Puppet Meister fell indicated he had fallen down up there as well at least... oh there he was... In a kinda awkward partially sitting up position next to the border, she could barely discern the contour of his silhouette and some orange of his hair. "Can you jump down? We'll catch you. ...If not, wait up there and we'll get to you in a moment." The shadow beast seemed down for now, but the fire wasn't fully out and she still didn't trust those strings. Had to be careful to not step on them.

"...Eh...he should be fine...just a little out of it, but fine," Amon replied, looking up at Lasair peeking from the ceiling. "In fact he may be safer up there than down he-"
He was interrupted by a subtle movement from the corner of his eye. Was it just him, or were those strings closer to Edel than before...?
A creeping suspicion grew as he raised his gun arm.
"Edel..." he began to warn.

This floor was really comfortable. The wood was nice and aged, soft even. And there was a rug of some sort under his legs that gave a little bit extra support. He couldn’t ask for anymore than that and it soon became difficult to fight off the alluring draw of slumber. His eyes began fluttering and he thought he saw the shadow beast crawling towards Edelweiss again, but surely it was just a trick of his tired mind.
Post by Edelweiss Fjäril on Feb 5, 2016 21:32:20 GMT
Everything went black. Edelweiss had the faint recollection of Amon's voice calling her attention and the sight of Lasair on the floor above, but now there was nothing. Her body wasn't responding, and she couldn't see anything. Did she trip and hit her head? No, that wasn't it. She thought she heard something like a laughter echoing stright into her mind - visceral, yet almost childish. And then screams, so many screams and so loud they were like deafening white noise in the background. Why did that sound so familiar... "Okay...heads up: being controlled sucks. It's like drowning in a storm of rage." Oh. Right, that was it. She had been warned before. That thing had caught her. Darn.

The redhead seemed to flinch as her name was called, and she stopped looking at Lasair to glance back at Amon with a blank look. A normal reaction to an incomplete calling, though maybe not so much to be so calm (or would it be hollow?) while in such a troublesome setting. She walked a couple steps, and it was almost hard to see the couple strings lazily resting on her feet until... she suddenly ducked and slid forward in a low kick. The puppet Meister was still testing what that body could do, and Amon was the closest target.

The moment Edel turned around, Amon knew it was too late. "Ah...crap," he muttered, readying himself for whatever the beast was going to make Edel do. "Yeah...this is not going to be fun-"
He barely finished that last thought when Edel suddenly ducked down, aiming to for a low kick. Amon jumped back, dodging the kick by just a hair, only to slam his back into the wall behind him.
"C'mon Edel! I know you're stronger than this!" he yelled as he aimed his arm gun and fired at the puppet meister.

Lasair began to drift off into a daze and was certain that the scene below him was some sort of a dream conjured up just for his brain to play back to him. Yes, certainly a dream. There was no other instance where Edelweiss would drop kick her boyfriend, was there?
Post by Edelweiss Fjäril on Feb 17, 2016 6:14:15 GMT
Unfortunately, contrary to Lasair's belief there was indeed something that could make Edelweiss drop kick her boyfriend other than the redhead man not having an accurate grasp of reality. Namely, being controlled by a shadow beast. She could hear Amon yelling, and was more or less aware of her body motions, but she still couldn't see and her mouth seemed to not be working. There was to way she could respond to it. He had been caught before too, he should know that. Although... it almost made her smile, as odd and misplaced that urge may be. Yes, she was stronger than that. With the Puppet Meister controling her actions, it felt like moving through water and her limbs heavy like lead. A direct punch, that became a grapple motion, then a sliding motion when the last one missed. No spells up to now. That thing was making her use about rank II or III of unharmed combat, and couldn't pull more out of her. It likely could use her spells, but didn't seem to know which would be good still. It just cringed in place, a slight rattling sound as the damaged mask moved and tugged strings around and made the redhead woman pick it up in a shielding stance.
"dEstROY, DesTRoy, KILL!" And all the noise in her head, that blood-chilling, otherworldly voice. Screaming. And screaming. And screaming. It was hard for Edelweiss to hear her own thoughts. They were blurry and got lost in the swirl of screams.
"Shut your non-existent mouth up, you're ANNOYING."
Her mental self stated in what could only be described as her own inner shout to wherever she supposed the shadow beast was located, which she guessed was in her own grip. Utterly aggravating indeed. Externally, there was no change in demeanor; it was still forcing her body to act as a puppet, and attacking anything alive within reach. But at least the noise stopped.
It was a bit easier to think now.

It took every ounce of energy and strength he had to dodge everything the Puppet Meister was making Edel throw at him, despite her obvious skill and his lack thereof. It seemed like it couldn't draw out her full power; good to know, but his luck wouldn't last that long.
Despite his shot missing, it came dangerously close to mask, to the point where it made Edel pick it up to protect it.
"It's getting desperate...just gotta drive it into a corner a little more..." Amon thought.
"OI! Lasair! Any time now!" he yelled, rushing at Edel in an attempt to tackle her.

The Puppet Meister seemed to shake in the redhead's grasp. It was hurt. It was hungry. And, by the looks of it, also afraid. Edelweiss tried to gauge what the situation would look like from a point of view external to her silent little mental prison. Amon had just shouted to Lasair. Did those two really have a plan? Or was Amon bluffing at the beast in hopes to distract it? Either alternative was possible, but at least in that very second it did nothing to change her situation. Her fingers could feel the trembling candle holder in her grip, but she couldn't even tighten her fingers around it. If she could toss it away... If she could crush it...
The shadow beast (finally) drew up some of her magic out for a cast, although Edelweiss wasn't sure whether intentionally or in a fit of panic, sending a wave of pure fear at the mechanic. [Deceit I casted - 0 (natural) Rank I casts remaining]

For the third time that night, Amon's arm ceased functioning, causing the mechanic to release a new torrent of swears just as he was hit with a wave of pure fear, causing him to stop mid-charge, even taking a step back.
What was he afraid of?
The Puppet Meister?
Edel?
The prospect of being killed by Edel?
Or even accidentally killing her?
He stood somewhat frozen in his tracks, his mind trying to sort out or even bury that emotion, shaking his head in an attempt to clear it or at least latch onto at a single thought in an attempt to at least perform an action.
(Sorry for the delay)

The shadow beast laughed, one of those hollow cackling sounds that echoed through the room as it made the redhead-puppet advance. Yes, that was better now. Fear. Frozen in fear. Frozen food.

Edelweiss had to concentrate hard in her blind mental state to gauge what was going on. There was a drop in her energy levels, probably the last of her lower casts - that thing must have made her use a spell. Something had to be done before yet another person turns helplessly magically depleted in there. But neither Amon nor Lasair were saying anything, and she couldn't say nor see anything. Like floating away in empty, dark space. Her legs brought her forward one step at a time. There was nothing to hear. ...At least until a dull metallic noise clang beneath her boot. The tray. That metal one where Lasair has been carrying fire on. Her face was turned down to it. Maybe she could use it as a mirror. She couldn't see, but she definitely still had eyes to make contact... did that thing's eyes even work the same as a person? Did it see through her? No matter, it was worth a shot. Split second decision here.
[Deceit V casted]
It'd end on either her catcthing control of the Meister controlling her, or struggling for control over her own body against it. So strange to treat herself as a remotely controlled puppet for a change as well, but any option was better than nothing. She stopped moving suddenly, firming her legs in place as her hands clenched the candle holder tighter and her voice escaped as a shaky breath: "Get... This thing... Off me."

Amon couldn't help but smile as he heard Edel's voice.
"Got it."
After swiftly punching himself in the ribs with his good arm, jolting some functionality into his mechanical one, he charged at Edel once more, readying himself to fire at the Puppet Meister's real body as soon as he got a clear shot.
Best case: kill the thing controlling Edel, thereby freeing her.
Worst case: Miss, but still tackle Edel to the ground, buying more time to get a second shot.
Theoretically at least.
"Second time's a charm," he muttered under his breath.
