Prepare for the #LodanRespawn2024 Existing characters may choose to be displace from/have memories of different timelines, thereby allowing returning members the option to retcon their whole character. These changes are the result of the "Unnatural Fog" plot device that is running between now and the Respawn. The plot is simple: no matter where your character is, that place is shrouded in a thick fog that suspends time, but not thoughts or memories, so even if they're repeating the same day over and over again, they continue to remember, so each time feels like a new day. For those retconning OCs; this is where new versions of themselves have the opportunity to replace the old versions. Official lore and tree updates will be announced asap

The thing about people attacking Edelweiss was, whenever she was too shocked to instantly plan a course of action (like now, her wide eyes look matching with the shadow beast having switched hosts and Amon coming to strangle her) her body reacted through muscle memory. Plus Amon only had one arm working at the moment - and it wasn't the metal one - and she had two. Block and divert the hand coming for her throat with the back of her hand, let it pass over her shoulder, slide forward and a packed punch delivered straight to the solar plexus. [UC V here]
".....I'm sorry", she winced. At least that was just a sparring motion, the type to knock the wind out of people and not the half dozen other variations that included... erh... "Goddrat it, no!" She better not even think of that. Not even half a second later Lasair was already body-slamming Amon, and Edelweiss shook her head to send those variant thoughts away, forcing herself to keep her attention on where the shadow beast was and the spot where the two men fell over. "Are you two alright?"
We interrupt your current mental stuggle for this important annoucemnt: pain! Amon's senses were shocked at the sudden strike, and hearing Edel's apology made him realize that he was probably made to attack the one person he didn't want to hurt.
Unfortunately, any other thoughts flew out the window when he felt Lasair pretty much tackle him, exacerbating his temporary inability to breathe, causing his body to twitch and gasp in its struggle for air. To make matters slightly worse, although he could feel every blow, it still felt as if the puppet miester's hold was not losening; it was like being trapped in a pinching bag, unable to see or move but able to feel every blow.
"For the love of everything good and sacred: AIM FOR THE FARCING CREATURE!!!" he screamed from his mental prison, still fighting back the torrent of rage as his body started to rise, the puppet miester floating sinisterly behind him.

Oh. Edel punched him as he charged at the duo. Whoops. The ander scrambled to his feet and watched Amon fight to breath while also fighting the puppet master. It seemed that damaging the host wouldn’t make the puppeteer loosen its hold.
On the bright side: It would be really easy to cut the strings right now while Amon is down. On the dark side: Lasair didn’t have anything sharp enough to cut strings.
Taking a few steps back, he bit his lip and thought about what he should do next. Try and use magic on the floating mask itself? It he could grab it, that might work. But would that hurt the Mingo’s leader? It was a tough call. The magic was there, flowing and twisting around in the energy at the palm of his hand. “What magic should I use,” he asked flatly. He needed to do something, but he didn’t know what to do. And he especially didn’t want to waste any more of his limited casts.

And while Lasair ponders of the bright and dark sides, everything in that room seemed to be screaming "come to the dark side, we have cookies! (or people's lifeforce, if you fancy snacking that!)" It seemed that Amon taking hits could still hurt -him-, but wasn't going to hurt the shadow beast and even less set the mechanic free. Also, touching those strings with any part of their bodies was a no-no, even if doing so to try and sever them - they'd just stick to you instead and make you the next puppet. Edelweiss let out a frustrated groan, and moved forward to pin Amon down in the most painless way she could think of in that limited amount of time (which was basically just sitting on him and straddling his waist with his arms pinned to his sides). "Las, if you comment on this I swear I'll punch you too (somewhere unpleasant)."
"Do you know any elemental spells?" She asked the fellow redhead in response when he asked what magic to use. "If yes, that, if not come here switch places with me and hold Amon down while I get that freaky thing."

Huh? So they were able to pin him down...with a not-so-unpleasant soft weight...what was...?
...oh...
Amon could feel his mental self begin to blush as a chaotic rush of emotions began to drive away the torrent of rage.
As quick as it happened, Amon suddenly felt the storm disappear, and free from its grasp, he woke up to confirm that it was, in fact, Edel straddling his body.
"Hey," he said weakly. Any feel-good feels were quickly thrown out the window though, as the puppet miester had merely changed tactics, releasing Amon for a far more suitable host: Edel.
"Darn it, MOVE," he thought. He was still a little weak, disorientated, and in pain from when he was being controlled.
"Watch it!" he shouted, doing his best to move Edel out of the way of the strings from his awkward position.

Elemental. He only knew two of those; Pyro and Terra. There wasn’t much in terms of soil available to be grabbed right now and the thing was a candle….
Might as well try the pyro anyway. Maybe the strings were flammable, or that mask. Lasair turned around for a moment, looking to find something flammable among the dismantled room. A strip of cloth stuck out to him. Snatching it quickly, he held it in his hand and began trying to snap his fingers to light it. But before he could focus enough to, his mind was pulled elsewhere as Amon spoke normally. Oh no, the puppeteer had moved on. And Edel was the closest host. Fighting with his fingers anew, Lasair tried desperately to light the fabric, but with someone else under its control, that only became more difficult.

Lasair neither replied back to her suggestion nor came over to switch places, so Edelweiss assumed he, yes, had some kind of elemental magic. Good. That type should be what they needed the most right then - terra and frost could toss chunks of stuff at the Puppet Meister or freeze its candle (and consequently put it off), and with some luck pyro could burn it or at least those wood-like string holders - and unfortunately the redhead woman didn't have any spells of that category so it was relieving to know someone else did.
Then a single word brought her thoughts back to the imediate moment: "Hey." Looking down to spot Amon still pinned by her legs, but looking very conscious (and making a face as if he was rather enjoying his current spot), she raised an eyebrow and the start of an amused smile seemed to be forming on her face just to fade into an icy look back at the shadow beast. It was dangerously close to her now, strings hovering free... And she really appreciated that fact. Strings were off, and without her having to worry tearing those apart by force might hurt Amon she could use a little ace in her sleeve.
Telekinesis I, casted once. 4 lvI casts remaining
That creepy mask thing floated in the air, so despite any size it literally couldn't be lighter. Focusing the spell on it as it tried to approach her, she used the telekinesis to slam it against the ceiling first and then the farther wall.
If she could, she'd be tossing it around endlessly like happens in one of those oldfashioned pinball machines, but the only downside of telekinesis was, despite her being rather fast with it, the casts still had a bothersome short duration and it would -not- last enough to hold the thing away forever. "Las if you can hurry with that I'd appreciate it." She grunted, standing back on her feet and offering a hand out for Amon to stand up too.
Okay. Yeah. That merely continued to confirm what Amon knew about Edel: she's awesome.
"Thanks," he grunted, taking her hand with his left and standing up. Still sore from that ordeal, he slowly began to flex his right arm in an effort regain motor control.
"Okay...heads up: being controlled sucks. It's like drowning in a storm of rage while being able to feel every blow done to you," he explained while continuing to catch his breath and preparing for puppet miester to get up.
A few seconds passed by.
Nothing.
"...Uh...where'd it go?"
Okay. There was no way it was going to be that easy.
Gaining control of his arm again, he clicked his metal fingers and briefly turned off the flashlight. In the darkness, he could see a faint blue glow disappear. Turning the light back on, he carefully rushed to where he last saw the glow, only to find a hole in the floor.
"Sonofa-" he swore. "Blasted thing's below us."
Just as he said that though, it jumped through another hole in the room behind them, immediately turning its strings to its original target: Lasair.

As Edelweiss used some magic on the creature, Lasair was finally able to light the dumb piece of cloth. It sprang to life as the fire licked at the flames and he held it in his hands lightly, ready to fling it in any direction the monster appeared in. As Amon clicked on the flashlight, he took a step to the side to get a better look. He only had a few seconds before the flames would climb up and burn his hand (rank two of the spell would be very useful right now).
Something moved out of the corner of his eye and he spun around, swinging the flaming cloth with him. He hoped to have hit the beast, but if not then a different sort of problem would be happening in the near future. Pyromancy I, used once. 2 rank I casts remaining

This thing was proving to be smarter than she had first estimated. Of course, in a sense, it should be a crafty beast to start with since it controlled and fed on people; but the fact it could float and therefore freely maneuver tridimentionally across the room and any other rooms that could be reached from that one was troublesome enough and it simply didn't stop moving, at least not while not having a living puppet.
Edelweiss tried to keep an eye on the ground and the dark corners around, being careful of where she steps, but that didn't keep the shadow beast from reappering somewhere else unexpected and try to snack up on Lasair again. Figures. On the (both figurative and literal) bright side, he had managed light up some fire now and swung the flames at it. And with how increasingly precarious their dispositions through that room were, Edelweiss could only hope, pray, that he managed to hit that thing and put it down for good.

The creature seemed to recoil at the sight of the flames, drawing its strings back as the flaming cloth nearly set the strings aflame.
gAaAaHhHhHhH!!! it seemed to scream before zipping away back the way it came, deeper into the house.
Amon blinked. "...Huh...so that's what its weakness is...knew something was strange about i-" he started, before doubling over in a series of painful coughs. "Dang it..." he muttered, taking a knee. That still hurt.
"Give me a second..." he said apologetically, catching his breath. "We just gotta be careful...that's all."
"And, Lasair, just be careful that you don't burn us all down with it," he added.

As the beast faded, Lasair was forced to drop the cloth while swinging it. The flames were too high, too close to his hand. It zipped through the air before landing on the ground. Uh-oh. That would need to get stamped out before the rest of the place caught on fire with it.
“I’ll try to be careful,” he said, hastily heading to where the fire hand landed.

"....Right. Sorry about that again." Edelweiss said with a guilty grimace as she watched Amon doubling over in pain and coughing. "Do you need a painkiller?"
The shadow beast shrieked at the fire and fled again, hidden somewhere they couldn't see, then Lasair dropped the fire - which thankfully wasn't instantly put out but also unfortunately might burn them like condemned witches if not controlled. "I'll only ask one thing of you two, if that thing actually get a hold of me, bash my head on the nearest wall till I stop moving please." Unless the building actually gets on fire first. This was a genuine request, not a drop of sarcasm here. She's perfectly aware of how dangerous it'd be if she turns into that thing's puppet, mainly if it can make use of her actual skills... She could only hope the 'till I stop moving' would be when she gets unconscious, not anything more serious.

Amon shook his head. "...I should be good," he finally gasped. "As for bashing your head in...not gonna make any promises," he grimaced as he got back up, taking slow breaths.
"Well...a little bit of consolation: I'm the easiest to bring down at least..." he added, dry humor coating his words.
They needed to wait until Lasair finished smothering the flames before they made their next move. While it would help, burning the building would probably not bode well for them...or for the rest of the district for that matter.

Another strip of cloth had caught on fire by the time he found where the first had landed. Biting his lip, he did his best to think of what to do, opting to grab the first metal thing he saw and try and scoop the flaming material up with it. A serving tray was the first thing he saw, and it worked well to hold the fabric. But it was going to die down soon. He really didn’t want to use another magical cast right now, so he scurried around and grabbed other materials and eventually maintained a small flame in the serving tray.
Lasair turned to the other pair with him then, holding the sides of the tray in each hand with an awkward smile. “We have fire now,” he said a bit nervously, holding the tray out towards them a bit. “What next?”
