Edelweiss just watched as he brought forth his own ink, and made herself comfortable on her seat silently letting him test around with both it and the one she handed over, even while knowing the normal one would have no effect. She could even see the metaphorical gears in his head turning and getting stuck as he tried to rationalize how the messages transfer was possible.
"Magic." She replied with a chuckle, just the smallest hint of teasing on the monoworded answer but mostly it being so because it was simply hard for her to find the right terms to explain how a spell (or anything with magical properties, really) worked to someone who had never used magic of their own before.
"In more detail, this is a minor form of magic that's passed down within a family. There are other examples of it, like Winged anders that turn their wings into tattoos to hide them, or people who put comfort charms on clothing items." She tried then, hoping the explanation was clear enough. "In this specific case two or more books are bonded - linked together if you will - during or after their binding by a caster's magic (it's possible to do it with multiple casters too). Then that caster is able to freely write with anything in any pages and the messages will be transferred automatically - but if you're not the one who bonded the books, ander or not, to make it work you need the caster's blood."
She shrugged slightly.
"That's not an inkwell filled with my blood, by the way;" That'd be both a tad creepy of a thought and inneficient judging by how quickly blood clots and dries when compared to ink. Besides, she'd given him blue ink, and her blood definitely wasn't blue, so no doubts about that. "a single drop mixed in works just fine, so pricking a finger and such is enough."
