When obtaining Skills, pick 6 of your chosen skills to become your “Active Skills” while your remaining skills (i.e. any number of skills greater than 6) are put in a more “dormant” state (more on that in a bit). For a visual guide, take a look at the diagram below:
[__] [__] [__] [ ]
[__] [__] [__] [_____]
Each of the smaller bracket/boxes (from hereon, referred to as Slots) each can hold a single Skill (i.e. Cryomancy, Gating, Unarmed Combat, Clockwork Robotics, etc.), while the large box (from hereon, referred to as the Pool) contains the rest of the skills you have learned.
Each Slot, regardless of skill type, will abide by the following restrictions (from hereon, referred to as Uses):
Skill Rank | Uses |
I | 5 |
II | 4 |
III | 3 |
IV | 2 |
V | 1 |
That being said, “Uses” will have a different meaning depending on the Skill type. Each Slot will allow you access to the highest Skill Tier that you have equipped, as well as the lower Tiers; for example, if you had maxed out the Pyromancy skill, you can use Rank I Pyromancy 5 times, Rank II Pyromancy 4 times, and so on.
Bonuses are granted if you make a maxed out Skill active. Additionally, different bonuses are also applied depending on whether you specialize in a single type of Skill (Magic, Tech, or Combat).
At first glance, having access to only six skills at a time seems limiting. However, there is still an incentive to learning every skill possible: Augments. Augments not only improve your Active Skills as a whole (such as augmenting each other), but some Augments can also grant access to the skills in your Pool to utilize as passives, further enhancing your Active Skills.
Switching Skills from the Slots to the Pool and visa versa can be done at the Fortune Teller NPC (ICly, once per day). Skills will retain their rank regardless of whether they are in the Slots or the Pool. On that same note, ranking up skills can still occur regardless of whether the skill is in the Slots or the Pool.
Any character who still didn't fill out the stats and slots fields in their personal profile will be considered to have a default stat spread (5 in all stats) with no active skills and no bonuses.
*Note: when listing your skills with the Fortune Teller, please list the highest rank that you have access to. It is implied that you have access to all abilities in the lower ranks.
Magic Specifics
Uses (or Casts) are the number of casts per day for that particular skill. When it comes to Augmentations, Magic tends to be more flexible than Tech, more often limited only by the caster’s imagination. However, Magic combinations, though possible to become more powerful than the sum of their parts, are still limited to the their casts and time limits. If you decide to put all Magic Skills into your Slots, you will get 5 bonus stat points to you character to distribute between Willpower and Skill. This bonus will no longer apply if all Slots are not filled with Magic Skills.
Tech Specifics
Tech is a bit of an oddity: depending on the Skill, Uses (or Capacity) are the amount of tech/fuel/ammo that you can hold on your person, with Skill having their own definition of Uses in their descriptions. However, there are some Skills don’t have Capacity, as they consist of a single tech/fuel tank and thus have a time limit. When it comes to Augmentations, Tech tends to be more limited compared Magic, as there are some logical limits as to what combinations are available. However, Tech combinations are usually permanent objects, and thus any granted bonuses apply so long as you are wearing/operating the Tech skill in question. If you decide to put all Tech Skills into your Slots, you will get 5 bonus stat points to your character to distribute between Strength and Skill. This bonus will no longer apply if all Slots are not filled with Tech Skills.
Combat Specifics
Combat skills are unique: not only do they not have any Uses, but they act as both Actives and Passives. This means that you will have full access to the Skills, regardless of the Skill being in the Slot or the Pool. However, there are advantages: each Combat Skill can grant bonus stat points, depending on skill and discipline. While they may grant a very small bonus when maxed and in the Pool, they will grant a much larger bonus when placed in a Slot. Effectively, by going the Combat route, you are choosing Stats over Skills. If you decideto put all Combat Skills into your Slots, you will get 5 bonus stat points to your character to distribute between Strength and Willpower. These bonuses will no longer apply if all Slots are not filled with Combat Skills.
