Invitations were plastered in every district, inviting citizens to take up their story books and imitate their favorite fable tonight. Brilliant golds, oranges, and pinks illuminated the sky with the sun’s slow departure. In the east dark purples and blues marked the first signs of night settling in, and for the day’s true potential to begin. Despite the current Martial Law in effect, long days and rampant stress plagued the city due to depleted supplies and lack of demand, riots and protests, curfews straining business incomes and therefore the economy, and the inevitable war that swept through the streets in worried rumors. In attempt to ease the situation, the Queen felt it best with the month of Harrowing upon them to throw a themed masquerade in honor of the city.
This magnificent celebration would take place in the Queen’s own revered garden so very rarely opened to the public. Age, gender, and race was not something to be thought about this night as the only goal set for those who wished to partake in the event was to simply enjoy themselves and company. At first sight guests would be greeted by many bails of hay which lined the outer gates of the grand palace, or so it was until they reached its hinged doors, wherein the gates were decorated in chords of spun gold that came out from the bails and braided through the iron lattice. The glittering gold of its interwoven strands winked as they were parted to allow the citizens in. Through the gates a path would be set before them made of pebbles painted to resemble bread crumbs, laid out to guide guests forward toward every attraction. Overhead in an elegant yet eerie manner, Briar Rose's brambles were overgrown to create an archway that would tunnel the guests from the entrance to the very heart of the party.
The first piece to catch one’s attention would be the masterfully sculpted fountain at the center, artfully sculpted with a mermaid statuette seated upon a jagged rock. Water poured forth from an empty conch shell she held in both her hands, and a light trickle from her eyes was made to give off the effect of her crying. As the trail of breadcrumbs looped around her, the party truly came to life. Behind the fountain an opening in the garden had been arranged to resemble the ballroom from Cinderella’s tale, bearing every intention of being used for dancing. Both a mock stage and balcony were fashioned out of stone and cement where a moderate sized orchestra were set up to play. A golden harp and its harpist were featured amidst their dark tailcoats and brass instruments. As the people poured in they began playing melodic music to the beat of a light waltz.
To the right of the ballroom stood a large gingerbread structure decorated with frosting and large pieces of candy. Within guests would find various refreshments and appetizers to partake in. To the left of the ballroom was another structure, though it appeared to be a tower with no entrance and only one window. From the single window fell a long, sturdy braid of what appeared to be hair. Surrounding the entire area was the botany of the Queen’s garden, expertly fashioned to look as though woods enclosed them. If one continued to follow the breadcrumbs they would find many surprises awaiting them. Hidden deep in the woods was a small cottage with seven small beds inside and seven axes. In another direction guest might stumble upon a red cloak pinned to a tree by a dagger, and should they look down at the base of the tree they would find blood splatter. Should someone take careful notice, claw marks and tufts of fur occupied the spot as well. At the very center of her majesty's vast lawns and mature trees stood an ornament of grander. Rising high into the starry night sky, so much so that it seemed to break through the clouds and get lost behind them, rose a twisted bean stalk thicker than any of the trees.
There was no cover charge to get in, no rsvp, the only catch is, one had to come dressed for the theme.
