Since she had been inducted into the military, Lorraine had met with her captain, received her uniform, been assigned her housing quarters, and then discovered the military library. Hours would go by and she would have her nose buried within the pages of large tomes or would stand overlooking many maps and battle plans. The only time she would pause her studies was to attend to Felix who never made a sound but waited with her patiently, waiting for his master to either address him or to take him out to attend to his nature’s calling. Other times she would pause to feed him though she did not bother to eat herself and when she did, she would still be reading along as she could not help herself.
One book in particular caught her interest and this one she read over twice. It’s topic covered the forest and the beasts lurking within but it was noted that there were still creatures that likely crossed over from the Andersweltler’s world that still have not been discovered. Some of the creatures were grotesque and frightening things that she’d hoped she would never come across while others were tame in comparison. As an ensign assigned to belong to recon, and due to her father’s love of hunting, she had a desire to explore the forest that surrounded Lodan but she was smart enough to know that you should never go in at night. Yet, all her military duties came first and so when she was finally free of them, she found the day to be closer to evening.
Standing outside of the barracks with her cloak on and Felix at her side, Lorraine was dressed in her jerkin and leather pants. On her left arm was a gauntlet with metal plating that served as a shield to block blows. This only prevented the chopping of her arm off however, and would not save her from crushing the bone or skin beneath resulting in only a desperate action of defense. At her hips her twin swords were secured on the right though she was only skilled enough to use one at a time. She dressed this way only to avoid disgracing her brothers and sisters in blue should she have to result in seeking an Andersweltler as a guide. Although she was part of the military and wary, she could not outright loathe anyone or anything until they had personally wronged her.
The sky was beginning to shift in color as she pulled her hood over her head and made her way through the street. Lorraine could have possibly gone to the forest near the vicinity of the barracks but to assure no one would stop her yet or come looking for her, she would make her way to the peasant’s hovel. At least there she might be able to find a guide or protector to venture near the outskirts of the forest for some coin. If anyone had spotted her or chosen to follow her on her way to the peasant’s hovel, she likely could not hear them or notice them as she grew lost to her own thoughts. It was a stupid thing she was doing, she knew but for a long time she had felt she never truly lived and she wanted to explore. The military had given her her freedom and perhaps one day she might be able to map the forest. That aside, maybe she would come across that lad who sold journals on the beasts within that made residence of the forest.
When she’d finally made it to the hovel it was much closer to dark now. Although it was not night, the sky was beginning to show a dark blue and lights were beginning to come on. Here, she grew tense and Felix must have felt it because he drew closer to her. The likeliness of being robbed or attacked here, she would assume was much higher and for good reason. These people had little to nothing where she had grown up lonely but privileged. As she rounded a corner, she could see the tree tops of the forest grow larger. The lights of a tavern filled the streets and there she decided she might find someone who was just as foolish as she was to go near that dark place. Inside the tavern many people stopped to scrutinize her and the strange beast at her feet. The looks she was given were full of mistrust and she only grew more tense. As an act to show them she was no enemy, she pushed back her hood to reveal her softer features then stepped over to the counter of the bar so she could glance over the gathered people and see who was most capable.
