Prepare for the #LodanRespawn2024 Existing characters may choose to be displace from/have memories of different timelines, thereby allowing returning members the option to retcon their whole character. These changes are the result of the "Unnatural Fog" plot device that is running between now and the Respawn. The plot is simple: no matter where your character is, that place is shrouded in a thick fog that suspends time, but not thoughts or memories, so even if they're repeating the same day over and over again, they continue to remember, so each time feels like a new day. For those retconning OCs; this is where new versions of themselves have the opportunity to replace the old versions. Official lore and tree updates will be announced asap

"That's not exactly what I meant." She sighed. "I meant my job. ...But you really don't care, do you?"
She had just told him she killed people for a living and he didn't as much as bat an eye at it. Either she was being more suspicious around people than she'd noticed (and that would need to be corrected), or he had some loose screws. Maybe both. She didn't know whether that second option was a good or bad thing, but then again, maybe there was no point in wondering either. So she just stood up and headed towards the kitchen instead. "I'm going to check if the cake is ready."

“Your job? Why wouldn’t that be alright?” He looked at her, standing to walk after her into the kitchen. He stayed out of her way as she looked to the cake in the oven. “I wanted to know the truth. I don’t mind that, well, you kill people. I suspected that you were involved with the assassins. I didn’t realize you were one of them, but now that I know…” He paused, looking for the words. “I guess I’m just happy to understand things now, to know what’s going on. It gives me perspective.” He lifted his hand up to scratch the back of his head, fishing for the words. It wasn’t exactly that he had some screws loose, but rather that this wasn’t the first time he had encountered the concept of killing others. Getting exposure to it helped alleviate the stress it seemed.

"What kind of perspective?" She stopped on her way to the kitchen, barely at the entrance's threshold, to look back at him with aneyebrow-raised-slighlty-squinty-eyed expression that was almost comical. Perspective of what? Of Lodan's 'killable' demographic?

“Perspective on…” trailing off, he had to think a bit more before continuing. “On why you’re so skilled in combat situations. And why you seem to take a neutral stance when it comes to topics of death. And I guess perspective on you too. Knowing that you risk your life to take others, and yet you’re willing to put yourself at risk to try and find this spell for your guild…it’s honorable. And I can better see how much weight is behind this agreement now.”

"'Neutral' how?" Had they at some point sat down and talked about their personal views of death? She couldn't remember a time like that. Maybe he was just remembering scattering comments here and there and made his own deductions from it... Or did he purely mean she didn't seem horrified by the prospect of it?
But the redhead man kept talking, and Edelweiss couldn't help it when a bewildered chuckle escaped her lips. "Had you expected any and all assassins to be ax crazy killers with no purpose? We have rules as well, Las, even if I don't know whether or not they're the same as in your guild."

“Neutral as in little to no emotional response to it. At least not that I can gauge when we talk. And no, I knew they were civil back when our guilds came together for a trial. I just don’t know the specifics of those rules and I never knew you were bound to them as well.” He shrugged, not really knowing what else to say on the matter.

Oh right. It was the 'didn't seem horrified by the prospect of it' option then, alright. "What kind of leader would impose a rule themselves can't follow?" She asked with a raised eyebrow, then turned to finish making her way into the kitchen. The question had been mostly rethorical, plus conversation could still be had from there and it was best to not let the cake burn.
"I can't detail that too much; letting you know what I do is already an exception I could only make because you're also opening an exception for me by allowing my stay in your guild grounds. But I can assure you it doesn't include hurting anyone innocent. We only take down criminals EIRAL should but fails to: those too crafty or too rich to be reached by legal means, or whose victims are undefended by law." Those who got away by attacking the poor, anders, women and children, refugees, minorities, etc. Not to say CAEsAL services were ever cheap, but there was also no rule stating payment couldn't be pooled up from different people issuing the same request together. "When there's no one else to offer help, people come to us. We're a sort of necessary evil."

The guild leader nodded. He hadn’t realized that he was thinking of them as hit men for hire, yet he found himself feeling corrected as Edel explained. It made sense, at the very least. Honorable reasons for unsavory actions. But while Lasair could understand them, it didn’t mean he would agree with them. Still he wasn’t one to question her or her guild, so best to keep his mouth shut on the matter.
“I understand, thank you for the information. Is the cake done?” There was a pause before the last sentence, to allow for a more reasonable shift in tone. But he did feel like a change in topic was needed. Even if the back of his mind was abuzz with thoughts of planning.

"I think so. Only missing some icing." She pondered while pulling aforementioned treat out of the over and moving to cut and place it on a plate to cool. How did they even manage to talk of secret guild deals, then skeletons in the closet, then cake, assassination laws, and cake again all as if those things were in a single string of thought? It was jarring in a sense, and unavoidable in another. But then again, were there any times Edelweiss and Lasair met without frenetically brainstorming around (both for the lighter or heavier topics)? If there was a day they didn't, she couldn't recall it right then.
"...This talk ruined the naptime in here for you, didn't it..." Not even just considering the fact the sudden realization that he had been sleeping in an assassin's home wouldn't be very 'relaxing' of a thought (or at least she couldn't imagine it as being relaxing), but also because he woke up with the commotion earlier on. Very belated apology there.

Some cakes didn’t need icing to be great, but if Edel’s was not one of those cakes, that was alright. It looked yummy either way so Lasair assumed it to be a good recipe. He watched her cut it leisurely, thinking to himself about various other things.
And then her other question brought him to attention. Clearing his throat before speaking he thought over what to say before speaking it. “I think not. It is nice to wake up within the city again as opposed to out and away from it. I figured your place was safe, but now I suppose it’s even safer knowing the skills you have hidden away.” Offering her a small smile, he did try to make light of the situation. “If you had wanted to kill me, you would have the very first night I slept here. Given that I’m still breathing, I see no reason to stop coming here. Unless you want me to stay away that is.” If he ever got the inkling that he wasn’t safe sleeping there, then he would stop coming. It was a simple enough fact. But for the time being, it was as safe as his home at MI.

It was true a cake didn't necessarily need icing to be great. But Edelweiss simply liked orange cake with a little icing or glaze to make the texture more moist. Lasair could have it without if he prefers, but to each their own.
At his mention of it being nice to wake within the city, Edelweiss found herself wondering why he left in the first place. She could guess it was related to the loss of his parents, and maybe wanting to be closer to and focus more on his own guild, but for him to feel like he really couldn't return, instead of simply choosing not to... what had happened to his house? Had it been hit by mortar fire or otherwise destroyed, or was it just an emotional block still? Whatever the actual answer may be, her train of thought on that was effectively frozen by his next comment:
"I figured your place was safe, but now I suppose it’s even safer knowing the skills you have hidden away."
Did he just imply, consciously or not, that he expected her to protect him if he's in danger there? With how warm her cheeks suddenly felt, she didn't need a mirror to guess she was now as red as a radioactive tomato. "It was me who told you could come over, wasn't it? I have no reason to retreat the invitation still." Just focus on glazing the cake for now; focus on the glazing.

As the color spread to her face, Lasair found himself smiling at the reaction. It was something he had said it seemed, which was quite alright. He stood back to let her have some air and glaze the cake at her own pace. But she did at least reaffirm that he was welcome to visit her place often. He appreciated being welcome somewhere.
“Thank you for that then. And I would extend the invitation to you as well, but unfortunately my residence is a bit more complicated to reach now.” He shrugged and leaned against the wall, still smiling faintly as she worked with the cake.

"Did we not agree on me visiting your 'residence' until those wards are found?" She looked back at him with just a hint of an amused smile on her lips before fetchfinaly picking the tray of cake up and bringing it over.
The day had started on a rather heavy and bitter note, but it seemed like breakfast was going to be sweet in the end.

“I meant in a casual sense, but yes yes later you’ll get to visit,” he spoke with a hint of laughter in his voice.
[That evening]
Lasair stood in the field where he would usually meet with the CAEsAL kids to help teach them magic. The wind blew gently, carrying a faint chill with it. Edelweiss had asked to meet tonight, and Lasair had picked out this location, so all that was left for him to do now was wait. He had arrived early, of course, and stood near the middle of the field. His lone figure would be seen as soon as someone broke away from the line of trees.

This was not going to be pleasant. That much was a given, since the redhead was willingly walking up to a meeting spot in the middle of the forest to get the lights knocked out of her. There was no way someone in sane conscience would find that nice, but it was part of the deal, so she'd get through it anyway. Just a matter of closing her eyes and thinking of her guild.
