Everyone was panicking, and no one knew where to get water - if they were even considering it. She glanced around in horror as families were rescuing children out of burning tents and running for safety. Lasair blazed past her and into the largest tent of all - the kitchen tent that was designed to provide shelter to an entire buffet. "Lasair!" She screamed as he ducked into the burning canvas. Where were her brothers? She felt overwhelmed, didn't know where to look or what to do.
"Clair!" "Clair!" She heard voices shouting.
She looked toward the sound and saw Milo and Klaus smacking a couple of shawls against the side of the tent, trying to beat out the flames.
She ran over to them, "Where's pa?" They shook their heads as if to say "no time."
"Bring water," Klaus ordered. Milo pointed to the front of their soup kitchen.
Right - Of course, they had a 10 gal bucket of water just inside the front of the tent. Clairee nodded and surged forward.
The tent was billowing black smoke and it couldn't escape fast enough being trapped under the canopy of the canvas roof. "Pa?!" She shouted as she entered, then coughed on the smoke. It was too dark to see. She started feeling around with her hands for the pail.
"Lasair!?" She called out when no answer came from Pa. She needed to find that water. A loud "BOOSH!" made her jump as one of the canvas walls fell and the access to the air outside cause the fire to rear up stronger. It was no longer smothered and starving for oxygen to burn. Clairee's eyes stung and she was still coughing on the scratchy black billows.
The water was somewhere in here, but she couldn't get to it. "PA!!" She shouted again, and she thought maybe she heard a voice call back (could be anybody in this thread), but it wasn't his and there was no time.
She knew she shouldn't. She wasn't supposed to ever give herself away in public, but she had to... Clairee held her hands out, fingers splayed, palms down toward the ground and cast Cryomancy I to pull a small amount of water out of the ground/surrounding area. Where ever that bucket was, she would gather it's contents this way. When she felt it all gather, she closed her eyes and focused on casting Cryomancy II to manipulate water via moving it through the air. It was a time consuming thing, something she hadn't practiced much since learning it which made it difficult to maintain. Especially when choking on smoke and being blinded by soot and ash. She closed her eyes and held her breath as long as she could while raising the water from the ground and spreading it across the canvas tent. She lifted until it was absorbed into the canopy with a dull fizz as both the water and flames converged into steam.
The sound was a relief as she fell to her knees and doubled over in the ashes. "Who's there?" she mumbled weakly between coughs that wracked her whole body. She couldn't open her eyes.
The fire had already spread and was still raging across the camp.
