Open to any who can justify being there
The killings were through, though Danny never did figure out why. Stephen's wedding was over and done with, and that was that. The thirty-first had come and gone, and not a soul cared, or even knew for that matter, that it was the eighteenth birthday of one Danielle Ravensdale. And so, as she did every year after her birthday, the girl packed a basket with three sandwiches, three glasses and a bottle of cordial, and three slices of chocolate cake. She put on a black dress that ended in white lace just above her knees. It had long sleeves, which also ended in white lace, and a high collar that hugged her neck. She had on a pair of knee length black boots with a silver buckle on each and in her hair, which she really needed to cut shorter again, she wore a plain white ribbon. She'd been scrounging and saving all year for this and wanted to look her best for the occasion.
She left the ruins that passed for her house early, before the sun was even up, and made her way to the cemetery just outside of Central Square. She followed the cobblestone path for ten minutes or so before turning off onto one of the branching paths and walking along. It didn't take much longer for her to reach where she was going. A pair of simple grey headstones greeted the girl, who smiled at the stones. She set down her basket and moved onto the grass between the two graves. The one on the right read "Here lies Alexander Ravensdale. Devoted Husband, Loving Father. 1851 - 1882". The stone on the left read simliarly "Here lies Natalie Ravensdale. Devoted Wife, Loving Mother. 1854 - 1882".
"Morning Mama... Papa. I'm sorry I haven't been by in a while... things have gotten pretty busy. But hey! I'm eighteen now, so yay me! Don't worry... I've been staying safe. Mostly. See, there was this murderer in town that nobody could seem to find, so I went to try and look for him. I had help! I'm friends with the Commander of EIRAL. He's a big guy... alot bigger than me. And he's brave and strong. What's more, he agreed to help me even though I'm an Ander! Can you believe that? Commander of EIRAL working with an Ander." Danny laughed to the two gravestones before lapsing into a quiet silence. After a moment she started talking again, but sounded more broken and beaten down than she had since her last visit to the graves. "I'm getting good work now... A man named Gabriel Sinnet's been looking after me. Sort of. I run deliveries for him and he makes sure I have enough to eat. We're kind of buddy... but he still doesn't know that I'm his little messenger. Oh! I was invited to a wedding between two nobles. And I'm even friends with them, too! I helped one of the regain her title... she was like me. No family down in the Hovel... but Stephen and I, we found her Grandpapa and Stephen put two and two together. I just helped... Stephen's the other noble. The one she got married to."
Danny pulled out the three glasses and the cordial. She poured a glass for herself, a glass for her father's tombstone, and one for her mother's. She then retrieved the sandwiches and placed one at each grave before taking her own. "I'm sure you've been lonely... But you're both here, and now so am I. I promise I'll visit more often... I've just got to get my work in order. Speaking of work, I got put in charge of a whole group of people! They're counting on me, so I can't let them down, but we're trying to do some good out here. We managed to stop some people from experimenting on Anders! That was good. I found out about them from this little girl... well, this little girl who's taller than me. But her name's Lone, and she doesn't have any family either... But she's doing alright for herself. I try and help out from time to time... but not as much as I should. It's okay though... Tyrell's there, and so is Lefiruc. They're both members of my little group... they helped shut down the labs."
Danny took a small bite of her sandwich and set it down before continuing. "I've met lots of people, to be honest. A couple of them I'd call my friends. Do you remember when Baron Cockfoster was younger how he had a daughter? Well... turns out she's one of my best friends in Lodan. Her name's Caitlin, and I've actually saved her life a couple times. Saved her from the killer, too. There's also Nikolai. He's a strange one because, and don't laugh when I say it, he's a clockwork doll. He's the metal brother of this motor head over in the Merchant's District named Viktor. The boy's had a pretty easy life but he's going through some hard times now. His little metal brother's probably the only thing that keeps him going. But the two of them aren't bad... just confused and don't know anything about living on their own." Danny picked up her sandwich and took another bite before leaning and resting her head on her mother's gravestone. She sat there with her eyes closed and quietly hummed the lullaby her mother used to sing when she was a little girl. The corners of her eyes glistened with tears that she didn't even try to hold back.
"I miss you two so much..."
