Gabriel had had listened to the conversation quietly, content just to absorb information after his attempt to see the doll was shot down, but the clockwork doll had struck a cord and Gabriel was not going to remain quietly much longer. Gabriel stepped forward as Amon started to take the mechanical man away, his usual pleasant look dropping.
"You should show more respect, Gabriel began, in a soft voice devoid of inflection, "The man you just called a nincompoop called you his brother. Just because you were created by the same man doesn't make you his brother, but he saw fit to grant you the honor. You may have been sent here to protect Viktor, but in the confines of this district you need his protection more than he needs yours, and like a good big brother, he was protecting you. Lack of emotion is not an acceptable excuse for rudeness or lack of gratitude. You would do well to keep a civil tongue when speaking of your brother around me."
Gabriel felt a little foolish for admonishing the clockwork being, but siblings where a touchy subject for him and the doll needed to learn, and learn quickly, to respect Viktor if for no other reason than that he took him as a brother rather than a possession. Turning to face Viktor, Gabriel spoke, adopting his pleasant mask again. "And you," he said, "Did very well with this crazy situation. I think I should have a bottle or two of good year in my shop, and you look like you could use a drink. Danny, you know where everything is in my shop, would you mind retrieving the wine while Amon does his inspection? Perhaps after we can celebrate."
Gabriel stepped back again, feeling awkward and looked for a place to sit. He wasn't very good at consoling people, and he thought it best he leave that to the others. He had just given Viktor his highest praise, more or less, and that was all he knew to say.
